Big question… Short answer, but one that is pondered by many.
How many times have you heard, “If I only knew…” or “If I could do it all over again…”, and then with disgust, disappointment or a shake of the head we go back and do the same thing. Most of us seem to do it, at least once in our lives, if not multiple times, yet few of us take out the time to analyze why we made the choices we did, and how to avoid making the “same type of choices” in the future. Notice I said same type of choices, and not good or bad. That is because we spend far too much too much time critiquing or belaboring our poorer choices than we should, and instead take the time to discover what we didn’t have in place, or information we needed to make better or the “best” decisions we could at the time we made them.
This reminds me of a true story which was told to me about Donald Trump, the multi-billion dollar real estate and business mogul. While Donald had failed as much as he has succeeded (at one point over $9 billion dollars in debt) he dwells not on the poorer decisions he has made, but instead on not having the absolute best resources, information and expert advisors surrounding him to make the best choices now and into in the foreseeable future. His empire turn-around, and “riches to rags to riches” story impresses or inspires many, but his external resource management impresses me the most. What Donald did was best predict his future by: taking the best resources available, applying their skills and assets to the problem, situation and opportunity, and making decisions based -on those expert analyses and predictability models for the future. Bottom -line…he allowed others the opportunity to ensure his success.
Much could be learned from Mr. Trump and others like him when it comes to making great decisions regarding smart, cost reducing, optimized positioning and profit enhancing decisions. Allowing others to help you obtain the best results through their expertise enhances your chances for success.
Then maybe your phrase going forward will be instead “let’s get the best resources to help ensure our success” vs “if I only knew”.
